Unique International Perspective

Our firm's founder, Randy S. Kramer, has been practising law for over 20 years and is licensed in four countries: the US, Canada, England & Wales.

Randy’s unique combination of education and experience allows him to ideally position our firm to understand and successfully work on matters from a truly international perspective.

Our cross-border focus involves drafting, negotiating, and reviewing a wide range of agreements and arrangements under the laws of the US, Canada, England & Wales, and elsewhere, as appropriate. It also involves providing comprehensive legal advice, being present for our clients when they need it most, dealing with governments and other third parties, and litigating contentious matters where necessary.

In addition, we provide legal and regulatory support to bring our clients’ operations into compliance with domestic and international laws and to maintain compliance.

We are dedicated to providing a wide range of legal services to transportation and logistics clients of all kinds, as well as to those seeking international trade, customs, and related expertise.

We are proud to do what we do in accordance with the laws of the US, Canada, and England & Wales, which distinguishes us substantially from other boutique law firms.

Common Law vs. Civil Law

When it comes to international law, there are significant differences between jurisdictions that follow the common law (originating in England) and those that follow the civil law (originating in France and Italy). In fact, most countries use civil law systems.

Even though civil law is so widespread internationally, most lawyers trained in the common law do not learn the complexities and nuances of the civil law and how they render the civil law substantially different from the common law.

Randy is a fully qualified civil law lawyer, having received a B.C.L. in Civil Law from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He then became a member of the Barreau du Québec (the province of Quebec is a civil law jurisdiction despite that the rest of Canada follows the common law). He also received a J.D. from McGill University, a common law degree.

When it comes to international legal matters, thorough knowledge of both the civil law and the common law is essential to a true understanding of complex cross-border dealings.

Bilingual Legal Practice

Although English is often considered the language of international business, when practising international law, it is highly recommended that one be fluent in more than one language. Experience has repeatedly shown that being able to communicate in a person's native language is a distinct asset.

We are fluent in both English and French.
